How the Road Wing was Invented
Chapter 1
In January 2009, I was struck with an idea for an invention. As a pilot of small airplanes, I came up with a wing design to attach to a car that would create lift and make the vehicle lighter, thus giving it better gas mileage.
It worked better than I could have imagined, but it looked atrocious. I built my first prototype out of wood and sheet metal and strapped it to the top of my vehicle with a strap running through the doors and inside the car. The cars that I tested the wing on were an Explorer, Grand Marquis, Toyota Camri and Ford Pickup
I conducted road tests a couple of times a week, often with my kids in the car. My kids thought the wing was cool. As to not draw attention to my invention, I only did the road tests at night. After continuously going to the same convenience store during my test runs, people started to ask about what I had strapped to the top of my car.
Excited to talk about my invention, I explained to them that the wing was an airfoil that improved my car’s gas mileage and stretched the length of time before needing another fill up.
It’s been a twelve-year journey and the story is too long to tell in one sitting. In the coming weeks, I’ll post another chapter telling the story of the Road Wing’s creation.
Thank you for the support in the success of the Road Wing!
Yours,
SH
